Mold Damage

[Narrator] So we received a call for a rooftop fire that took many, many hours to put the fire out in many, many thousands of gallons of water. It turned into a very extensive water damage event for the customer. This facility is located on a campus of a large university, and it happened to be their primary office in laboratory building. When I first arrived on site, I mean, I knew it had been sitting for a while, and I knew it was gonna be moldy, and I knew it was gonna be a problem. And as we were getting ready to go and putting our personal protective equipment on, someone opened the front door and from 20 feet away I could smell it right away. And when you smell something like that, that’s that moldy, it just doesn’t lead you right away. Given the amount of mold present and the amount of other issues related to it being an older building, there’s a great deal of health concern among all of their occupants and staff, and students as to, can this building be made safe again? So we separated the project into two separate phases. The initial phase was to get all of the bad things out, make the building safe, and the second phase was to design and rebuild the damaged building. During the initial phases of the project, we mobilized in excess of 350 people. Mold is not a detail we can turn a blind eye to. If we leave a little bit of mold, if a corner is cut, if something’s ignored, that problem will continue to propagate, continue to get worse, and that building will continue to cause health problems for the occupants of that building well into the future. First on site always adheres to industry related guidelines and we’re very specific about the types of technicians, and their training and certification, and if appropriate, licensing to complete this work. The right way to do this is to do it all, do at once, and do it now. And that protects everyone’s health and safety, protects everyone’s liability, and makes for a much cleaner and safer environment for all of us. As we progressed through the project, the customer was ever-appreciative. The customer had a large grand reopening ceremony, a lot of local dignitaries and politicians, and it was great to be able to attend that and see this nice finished school. But really what was the most rewarding is being there that first week of September when the students are coming back, many international students from all over the world, and seeing them be able to continue their education and walk right back into their school again was by far the most rewarding part of the experience.
